San Antonio de los Baños, Artemisa, Cuba.- The neonatology service of ´´Ivan Portuondo´´ Teaching Hospital of the municipality guarantees stability in premature infants care. This is a provincial reference center for children under 1500 grams at birth, although there are patients from nearby towns. At present doctors and nurses comply with indicators, with a total of five cases.
Another alternative is the skin-to-skin service where preterm children have physical contact with their mothers, due to the importance of stimulation of breastfeeding, the development of the newborn as well as the direct link between mother and son.
Preterm birth is one of the incidences that continues in the territory, according to experts of the Mother-Child Program, although there is a decrease, compared to the previous year.
Dr. Osmani Martinez, Specialist in neonatology of the Ariguanabense Medical Center, says that the service offers special care for the neonatal period, regardless of the cause, known or unforeseen.
