San Antonio de los Baños, Artemisa, Cuba.- The different forms of production in this town fulfilled the total plan in 2015, despite the weather conditions that affected crop yields.
According to the total production plan (42 248 tonnes), it was reached 43,285. Despite the compliance there were damages on crops, so states Ketsey Ortega Ruiz, member of the Food Area Bureau of the National Small Farmers Association of (NSFA). Crops such as sweet potatoes, taro, tomatoes and beans presented failures in the contracted sales as they did not reach 100 percent, the rest was favorably.
Ketsey states that this year began with a great climatic instability, first, the drought, then heavy rains in November, which resulted in crop losses, such as tomatoes and beans. She points out that the seedlings of other crops were affected, so there was a delay in planting.
She insists that the weather situation affects yields and hinders the evolutionary development of crops. The planting plan was fulfilled in 2015, but the results were not favorable.
