Rural women represent the multiple roles of performance within Cuban society, the influence on economic development points the way to the rise since the Revolution. Incidentally,we talked with Belkis Rodriguez Hernandez, President of the Cuban Women Federation (CWF)in the territory.
What work does the CWF develop?
The CWF together with other institutions and organizations develop activities with the female universe. We have 260 women involved in food production, responsible also for the welfare of the family as mothers, daughters, wives who ensure the maintenance of the family in some cases.The actions with the National Small Farmers Association (NSFA) and grassroots organizations enable compliance with the law, regarding the recognition of women’s rights and the inclusion in all areas.
In 2016, the NSFA celebrates the 55th anniversary, what actions will the CWF develop with rural women?
Mainly we are immersed in reviving the CWF-NSFA brigades. The aim is to encourage the participation of rural women, exchange experiences from the different roles and hold meetings with the participation of the town historian.
In San Antonio de los Baños the representation of rural women as leaders, agricultural techniques and field workers are strategies linked to the work of gender equality, what actions are planned for this year?
Gender workshops are generating opportunities for exchange between women and men about the role of both. We develop themes about how we live as a family, the coexistence of different age groups, the intergenerational treatment, care and respect for the elderly, women, pregnancy, care and education of children. In addition, confronting all manifestations of violence or acts of discrimination against females is a premise of the CWF through every peasant organization representatives.
