San Antonio de los Baños, Artemisa, Cuba.- ¨The Maternal and Child Program¨ of this town remained a high incidence of low birth weight, a risk factor that compromises the development of the baby, so in monitoring pregnant, doctor and nurse work to influence in the causes to reduce the incidence.
Yamilet Borego, Head of the Health Care Department Program stated that the Maternal and Child Program works with the premise that children with low birth weight is a risk baby, that’s why from the primary care, doctor and nurse together with the pediatrician follow up them through consultations and visits considering that the prevention of diseases is the best medicine and the guarantee for the future life of the baby.
Yamilet insists on the responsibility of the family, the baby's mother must meet consultation and follow up the newborn, as well as the responsibility of the doctor in the health area.
The low birth weight is now considered one of the most important causes of perinatal morbidmortality and it is one of the indicators of greatest impact on the results which evaluates the quality of prenatal care, the prospects for child survival and babies’ health explains the Head of the Health Care Department.
She added that through multiple actions exclusive breastfeeding and the importance of keeping up to six months is oriented, the study of hemoglobin is done beginning from six months, the vaccination plan and the introduction o food according to the age of the infant. Yamilet points out that in children with low birth weight the control of risk factors must be extreme, as well as monitoring the pathologies associated with their condition.
