Day of work, sweat and tears

Spanish Version

It´s  the day 121st of the year in the Gregorian calendar and the 122nd in leap years. According to history, in May is abolished slavery in the British Empire, the same date in 2006, Bolivian President Evo Morales nationalized the hydrocarbons in the country and the United States celebrates the Law Day and Loyalty .

However, the date which is praised and commemorated around the world for the social importance, is the International Workers Day. It is the quintessential celebration of the world labor movement. It goes back to the first day of May 1886, when a group of unionists anarchist were killed in Chicago, United States, for their struggle to implement the eight-hour workday.

Two hundred thousand workers went on strike at one of the humble villas of housed farmers and unemployed migrants from around the world during the stage of the Industrial Revolution.

The demonstrations continued until May 4 in Haymarket Square riot, site where the workers were beaten and tortured.

As was reflected in a proclamation of the time, the class war had begun, the blood asked revenge. The workers said: We are not a flock of sheep, it is better to die than be in poverty. Yesterday, women and children of the poor were crying for their husbands and their parents were shot, while in the palaces of the rich expensive wine glasses were filled and drank to the health of the bandits of order ...

Have courage, slaves! Arise!

Pastors, retailers, printers went to prison. Journalists and carpenters died by hanging.

José Martí, correspondent in Chicago from "La Nación" newspaper, then recounted the scene: ... leave their cells. They shake hands, smile. I read the judgment, we hold hands in the back in handcuffs. Below is the audience sitting in chairs rows in front of the scaffold as in a theater ... I lowered the hood, then a sign, a noise, the trap gives the four bodies fall and sway in a frightful dance ...

In honor of Chicago martyrs today claimed the rights of worldwide workers. Our country applies its laws based on respect, remuneration and social protection. Therefore, despite the intrinsic tears in their history, the May Day in Cuba is a celebration day.
