San Antonio de los Baños, Artemisa, Cuba - The territory faces the World Breastfeeding Week in Cuba with the priority on systematic educational work in all the family doctors offices and advocacy through lectures and discussions in pregnant population of the area they serve.
With the view that millions of children improved significantly with breastfeeding, specialists from the Municipal Health Department take the preventive work from the stage of the recruitment to stress the importance of breastfeeding that unlike other nations in the island the newborns receive this food, some beyond the six months, because women have a paid maternity until the child reaches his first birthday.
Experts attending the Maternal and Child Program in the territory assert that in the first six months, breastfeeding protects children from acute respiratory infections and urinary tract, otitis media, asthma, diarrhea, allergies, diabetes, lymphoma, reduces the risk of malnutrition , helps build healthy teeth and prevents deformation in the mouth.
During this period mothers also receive benefits because, besides loving gratification, prevent breast and uterine cancer have less risk of postpartum hemorrhage, osteoporosis and lose the accumulated weight during pregnancy, among other advantages.
Cuba is one of the 170 countries that celebrate World Breastfeeding Week in the first seven days of August, since 1990, when it was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Fund for Children.
